Segregation in Nassau County

Nassau County remains highly residentially segregated by race. The map below shows the African-American, non-Hispanic population of Nassau’s various towns and villages. The map is generated from the 2012 American Community Survey 5-year estimates. Jurisdictions depicted in blue have African-American, non-Hispanic populations of less than 3.0 percent; those in purple, from 3.0 to 40.0 percent; and those in red, greater than 40.0 percent. Map produced using the wonderful tool made available to us by our colleagues at Social Explorer.

As you see, lots of Nassau is depicted in blue, meaning disproportionatetly low African-American, non-Hispanic populations compared both to Nassau as a whole and to the broader housing market (including New York City) of which Nassau is a part.
